I’ve lived in the Midwest my entire life. And to be more specific (besides the two years spent two hours south at college) I’ve lived in Kansas City my entire life. I absolutely love this city and love calling it my home. But to be frank, the Kansas City summer heat is much less than desirable. As much as I hate shoveling the snow in the winter and throwing on 3 pairs of leggings for running errands, I’d much rather deal with the winter blizzards than I would the summer heat.
Allow me to be honest with you for a second. And this is coming for your very loving, very encouraging wedding photographer here – no one is happy in a floor length gown in 115 degrees. Let alone a three piece suit. But at the same time believe me when I say, that shouldn’t prevent you from planning a Kansas City summer wedding! All of that to say, I am here to give you my professional tips and tricks to staying cool in the summer heat on your wedding day.
Communicate with Your Beauty Team
You’ve chosen to work with the professionals for a reason! Allow them to apply their years of knowledge and expertise into working their magic on your wedding day. Communicate ahead of time about your concerns so they can take the necessary steps to give you the beautiful wedding glam that will stand the test of the heat.
I also encourage you to talk to your beauty team about realistic expectations with your specific hair and skin type. Some skin is more prone to sweating and getting oily in the heat. Some hair is more prone to getting frizzy and out of control under the sun. They’ll be able to help guide you into selecting the best look with all things considered.
Prepare Your Bridal Party
I am all for organized and effective communication with your bridal party pre-wedding day. Giving your bridal party clear instructions on how to prepare for your big day will help keep them happy when the day finally arrives. No one likes being hot and sweaty, let alone in front of a camera lens. Ask your bridal party to bring fans, water bottles, blotting sheets, and an extra pair of shoes to the photography locations.
When the bridal party comes prepared, they can better combat what Kansas City’s summer is about to throw their way.
Pack Water and Snacks for the Trip
I’ll give this tip to any couple planning any wedding in any season, but it’s especially important in the summer. Make sure to pack a cooler or two full of ice and water for the trip to the photo locations. Although it is a party, I would try to encourage your bridal party as much as possible to stay hydrated with water instead of alcohol before the pictures are over with.
And who doesn’t like snacks! Pack snacks that are mess-free. No one wants condiments spilt on a bridesmaid dress (especially your photographer who will inevitably be photoshopping it out later).
Be Efficient with Your Timeline
The less running around you have to do on wedding day, the cooler you, your soon-to-be, and your bridal party can be. Consider opting for a first look over the traditional ceremony first look. By doing a first look before the ceremony, this will allow your timeline to fit all wedding day portraits in a singular time slot.
Also make sure your planner and photographer are allowing for extra wiggle room in the timeline. This will allow you and your VIP’s enough time for water breaks, hair/makeup touch ups, and RESTING! Being able to take a moment to rest on a busy wedding day is never going to go unappreciated.
