Achieving a timeless and romantic picture takes more planning than you’d think. But throughout reading this guide, I’m sure you’ll understand my logic. When it comes to selecting your location for portraits, whether that be at the venue or down the street, there are some important factors I keep in mind.
Ample Space for Portraits
Firstly, I want to make sure we have enough room to capture everything. For example, if you have a larger bridal party, I want to make sure there is enough space for everyone to stand in a line for a traditional smiling pose. Along with this, I also need to make sure that there is enough room for me to scoot back far enough to capture this long line of standing smiling faces.
Proper Lighting
Secondly, I take into consideration what the lighting will be like on the day of. This part gets a little technical, so you’ll have to trust me on it as I don’t want to talk your ear off about the technicalities, but in general, I’m looking for soft, even lighting.
Timeless Backdrops
Lastly, I am looking for a backdrop that is timeless and neutral. It’s less about the exact things I look for and more about the exact things I’m looking to avoid. For example, I stay away from brick, graffiti, dirty alleys, busy backgrounds, neon, and any strong patterns.
I want your final gallery to be cohesive and tell the story of your day. It wouldn’t make sense if your portrait pictures are on a beach but you got married on top of a mountain. That metaphor is a bit out there, but I’m sure you understand what I mean.
